  1. Wow. My favorite quote from this is, "We live in exponential times," because it really is a profound and accurate way of stating technology in the world. When I think of exponants, I always think of a graph. While it begins going up very slowly, there is a point at which it becomes a line going nearly vertical (if you follow it long enough). As this applies to technology, it would mean that advancements would be coming faster than we could possibly measure. Except, maybe, by using technology.

  2. I shared this with my husband a retired teacher and he immediately shared it with the grand kids mother (also a teacher). I have seen this video before and found it interesting the second time around. The video reinforces that there is a tremendous amount of information out there and not we have it literally at our finger tips, due to the technology. If we are to prepare children for this, we need to ask parents what are you doing to prepare you child for this future. If they asked me what to do I would say read to your child and instill in them a love of reading.

  3. I shared this with fellow educators who have a passion for using technology to motivate students to learn. I also shared the video with friends who hate technology. The responses were facinating.
I watched the video compare the technology shift from 10 years ago to now on my front porch recliner with a wireless laptop (definately not possible 10 years ago. As I watched I was feeling pretty good about the ways we integrate technology into education at BMS; but also feeling like we 'drill and kill" to prepare them for the assessments and this leaves little time for truly creative tech-rich projects and learning.
The video also challenges us to rethink copyright. Are kids who take video, images and sound from the internet and use it to produce a unique project that they post online violating copyright? The law on this is currently under review and there are good arguments on both sides. The video states that 1/2 of our students have created web content, but is it content that helped them to learn, or helps others or learn or is it just silly webpages that list their favorite things? I love technology and I love using it with students, but we need to use it in a meaningful way, and we really need to help kids start to teach themselves and to work on problem solving when the tech doesn't do exactly what they need. Many of my kids shut down too easily with no problem solving or say "the computer won't let me", so just having lots of access does mean an increase in thinking or learning!

  4. I have seen this a few times: once from my nephew and then last night at a Horseheads School District Core Team meeting, where we are planning for the next 10 years. We actually addressed how we as a team can help kids move into the 21st century in light of the rapidly developing technology in the world. We have 6 different task forces who are and will be looking at how to prepare our students.

  5. I watched this video a couple of years ago and came away feeling frightened about my role as a teacher who must prepare the students of today for the 21st century. Clearly our educational systems are beginning to see that teaching the "same ole, same ole, in the same ole way" is not going to work, and yet we have so far to go to change the way we teach in order to truly prepare our students. I so agree with Jill E's comments above. State tests have become such a deep part of all that we do. In addition, we often place students in front of computers and say we are using technology, yet we need to truly teach students how to use technolgy in the most effective ways in order to produce true learning.

  6. I have also seen this video before as part of a faculty meeting. We are not doing enough to prepare students for the future. How can we instill a love for learning or curiosity about things? They definitely need to learn about technology and how it can be used for learning and in the workplace; not just for games or to google something. We need to help them overcome their laziness about life but parents need to do their part to help as well.

  7. We used this video two years ago as a touchstone for our professional learning in literacy and technological literacy. Teachers really responded to its powerful message.

  8. It really gives you something to think about! Did You Know by Karl Fisch was emailed to me a few months ago. I sent Did You Know 2.0 to staff members at Hendy. I'm not sure how many teachers actually viewed it because we are bombarded with emails daily.
